Morterra on mobile, with new highscores and player titles

In March 2021 Morterra became playable on phones. The same update added a chess-style PvP rating, eight new highscore categories and a title in chat for the top player in each.

The March 7, 2021 update brought Morterra to mobile. The browser survival MMO could now be played on a phone, and we asked players to report any bugs they found there. The update also added a PvP rating, new highscore categories and titles for the players at the top of each one.

Mobile had been a goal since June 2020. At the time we said we would first optimize the game to run at 60 FPS on a standard laptop and then add controls for phones.

Highscores and titles

The PvP rating works the same way as Elo ratings in chess. It joined seven other new highscore categories: time as king, boulders mined, fish caught, animals killed, trees cut, explosives used and objects placed.

The #1 player in each highscore category now gets a title in front of their name in chat. The titles are King, Survivor, Killer, Rating, Emperor, Miner, Lumberjack, Fisher, Hunter, Raider and Builder. Most match their category, so the player with the most trees cut is the Lumberjack and the one who has used the most explosives is the Raider. We first talked about titles like these in April 2020.

The King is whoever has worn a crown the longest, and the King's zone now always shows on the global map as a crown icon. Crowns had been craftable since August 2020.

Settings and display

  • Automatic fullscreen, which can be turned off in settings
  • A better settings page with tabs and extra options
  • A setting to turn fog on and off
  • Shading on the terrain
  • A better first-person view that shows your held weapon and shield

Balance and fixes

Sleeping bags now have a 30-second respawn timer, which we had planned since April 2020. Raiding with tools is much faster than before, but the diamond perk no longer protects tools while you raid, so they break as they normally would. Armor also got a significant buff.

  • You can no longer attack or loot through walls and doors
  • Backpacks no longer break during PvP
  • The craft and examine menus are sized correctly
